Historic Civil Service Cape – WHP Campbell

March 8, 2010

This is a highly attractive item of very interesting provenance. A cape used in the British civil service, with civil service buttons that indicate it may have had something to with the Royal Household of George V. The maker is Wilkinson & Sons of 34 and 35 Maddox Avenue, London W – a very esteemed maker. But most interesting of all is the name on the label – WHP Campbell Esquire, 1909.

In the late 19th century WHP Campbell was a prominent political figure, leader of the Chistian Socialist Party, and editor of The Christian Socialist. It was an organisation that seems to have had strong associations with the Fabians. So – a most interesting piece of history and certainly the kind of item you’re unlikely to come across again. Of course, it is speculative to assume that this item belonged to this particular WHP Campbell.. A little research is needed here, but it is certainly a possibility that has to be entertained.

Regardless, this is a fine element of civil uniform – black wool cape with velvet collar and a splendid white silk lining. Other than some small tearing on the inside of the lining at the collar, it is in immaculate condition.

AU $395
